Drones in Construction Session

Integrating UAV into the BIM/Construction Environment

Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) are becoming widely used tool for architects, engineers, and construction site managers. The ability to have an aerial view along with the collection of data from these sUAS is revolutionizing construction sites. As with any new tool, an sUAS must be implemented with safety and end goals in mind. This introductory workshop will provide an overview of what needs to be considered when considering sUAS for BIM/construction. In this session we will cover how to effectively accomplish: – Identifying the exact purpose of the UAV as applied to BIM/construction – Defining your objectives and planning your UAV/sUAS use – Which UAV and sensor payload is best for the job required – Insurance considerations – An introduction to Surveying and Mapping with UAVs —- UAV as a tool for all stages of construction. (Pre-construction stage, construction stage, post-construction stage and ongoing safety maintenance.) —- How UAVs can streamline construction projects through data/image collection —- Decreasing costs & increasing onsite safety —- Project deliverables: How UAV images can be transformed from raw images to 2D maps and 3D models

Drones and Photogrammetry Driving New BIM Innovations and Returns

Presentation Abstract Synopsis : The construction industry is fully embracing the concept of BIM, but not without challenges. This presentation will outline how drone technologies and on-site cameras can be used in the construction industry to support and verify the BIM process. The presentation will focus on jobsite data capture, processing and analysis via photogrammetry software and cloud applications in order to create valuable 2D and 3D map intelligence to keep a site safe, on schedule, and on-design. Full Presentation Abstract: The construction industry is fully embracing the concept of BIM, but not without challenges. BIM provides the industry with an efficient way to complete complex projects; however, the very detailed schedule and build sequences defined by the BIM process must be strictly adhered to. Any construction errors or deviations from schedule could have a large impact on the process. One way to ensure the efficiency of the BIM process is to regularly monitor sites in order to spot errors early and adjust the process: avoiding unnecessary and expensive rework at later build stages. For surveyors, routinely collecting data, both at minimal cost and without interfering with the site work, is challenging. This presentation will explain how drones (UAVs) are being used to collect images, which are processed in photogrammetry software, creating 2D maps and 3D models that support the BIM process. The capture, process, and analysis will be explained in the presentation, showing how the workflow has become fully automated due to cloud applications, and how data is directly integrated with BIM for the scheduling and as-built status to be verified on a daily basis. Although drones are an excellent solution for collecting non-intrusive site data, they are not a perfect solution: they require a degree of expertise, are dependent on weather conditions, and cannot be flown everywhere. Additionally, drones traditionally collect data from an aerial perspective and may miss potentially important data from other perspectives. This presentation will address such issues and conclude with a discussion on new image data capture methods which use tower crane mounted cameras and a 360° handheld camera. These will revolutionize the way the construction industry approaches monitoring and BIM verification.

Aerial Technology – The B2B “Google Earth Type” Future

This is the time before the internet! The presentation is centered upon the current and coming impacts of aerial technology to AEC. We present what the strategic markets are for AEC (both on the private and governmental) and the order of magnitude of impact of disruption expected to occur to these markets due to this technology, as confirmed by analysists such as Boston Consulting Group, PWC, American Institute Of Architects, Standard & Poors, McKinsey & Co, and others. Such analysts predict overall costing impacts in the hundreds of billions per year to as much as a trillion dollars in cost benefit globally. We will define the SaaS based technology that is the hub of collaboration on the numerous forms of information from this technology, interfacing with BIM, CAD, GIS, 3rd party data and historical data while providing full collaboration across numerous parties associated with infrastructure and building projects. This capability effects the entire lifecycle, from pre-go no-go/what if analysis of project viability through design processes, construction process and on-going operational use of delivered projects. We present the current sectors of AEC that will be the ultimate providers of this technology to the AEC market in general. and how Private Equity is currently buying up these providers to accelerate the disruption to the market. The audience will understand what the requirements are a professional aerial technology provider and the six pillars of success. The presentation will outline the breadth of Private Side AEC sectors impacted by this technology (engineering, architecture, developers, environmental engineers, building inspectors, taxing authorities, and many more) and governmental side (engineering, permitting, public works, code enforcement, public health, emergency management/public safety, streets, water, inspectors, airport, information systems, housing, planning, and much much more) to share in this collaborative technology. The presentation will clearly define the depth and breadth of this extremely flexible technology in terms of information gathering (almost 100 different types of sensors – magnetometer, infrared, corona cameras, ground penetrating radar, air & pollution sensing, multi-spectral, and many more), information processing into derivative products (automated change detection, 3d models, data pattern analysis, and much more) and aerial robotics automation (doing to actual work of human beings). We routinely receive very positive feedback from our presentations explaining of how aerial technology is a disruptive solution, that will be provided by current companies within AEC that are being acquired by Private Equity, due to the impacts to this very large sector of our economy, due to substantial and predictable ROI. The objective of this presentation is purely educational in nature, as are all of our presentations.
